چکیده

[1] In this study, using the nonlinear principal analysis (NLPCA) technique, we demonstrated that the leading El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) mode in a physical basis changed since the late 1970s. The ENSO mode during the pre-1980s resembles the destabilized ‘ocean basin mode’, while during the post-1980s does ‘the recharge-mode’. In particular, for the pre-1980s, the surface zonal current mainly acts as an intensifier of the ENSO, while that during post-1980s it plays a role in the transition of the ENSO cycle. The NLPCA results are reconfirmed by the eigen analysis of the linearized intermediated ENSO model. Over a reasonable parameter range, the leading eigen modes associated with the pre-1980s are completely separable from those associated with the post-1980s. The eigen structures for each decadal-period resemble the corresponding NLPCA patterns. Citation: An, S.-I., Z. Ye, and W. W. An Eigen Analysis of the Interdecadal Changes in the Structure and Frequency of ENSO Mode

The mechanisms of interdecadal changes of El NifioSouthern Oscillation (ENSO) modes are examined through an eigen analysis of a simple coupled ocean-atmosphere model. It is shown that the observed interdecadal climate shift can effectively modify the strength of two major coupled feedbacks for the ENSO mode, namely, the zonal advection and thermocline feedbacks. These modifications lead to quan...

A mechanism for decadal changes of ENSO behavior: roles of background wind changes

This study explains why a number of El Nino properties (period, amplitude, structure, and propagation) have changed in a coherent manner since the late 1970s and why these changes had almost concurred with the Pacific decadal climate shift. Evidence is presented to show that from the pre-shift (1961–1975) to the postshift (1981–1995) epoch, significant changes in the tropical Pacific are found ...

A method for detecting season-dependent modes of climate variability: S-EOF analysis

[1] Anomalous climate is often regulated by the annual cycle. Based on this physical consideration, we propose a new method termed as Season-reliant Empirical Orthogonal Function (S-EOF) analysis to detect major modes of climate variability. The S-EOF analysis of Indo-Pacific SST during the past 54 years reveals two statistically significant leading modes, which are not obtainable by using conv...

Coexistence of Equatorial Coupled Modes of ENSO*

To study the regimes of leading ocean–atmosphere coupled modes of relevance to the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) phenomenon, a comprehensive eigenmode analysis of an intermediate coupled model linearized with respect to an array of basic states is performed. Different kinds of leading modes are found to coexist and become unstable under wide ranges of basic states and parameter conditions...

The influence of climate regime shift on ENSO

Observations indicated that for the El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) there have been eastward displacements of the zonal wind stress anomalies and surface heat flux (short wave heat flux and latent heat flux) anomalies during El Niño episodes in the 1981-1995 regime relative to the earlier regime of 1961-1975 (without corresponding displacements during La Niña episodes). Our numerical experi...
